AI Training Paradox: Competence from the Machine, Relatedness from the Mentor

AI can build clinical competence through safe repetition, while human supervisors provide the relationship and ethical guidance trainees need.

I recently read a fascinating systematic review by Li, Zhou, & Chiu (2025) on AI chatbots in language learning from Interactive Learning Environments. It instantly struck me as a perfect blueprint for training therapists. Just like learning a new language, developing clinical skills requires both knowing the rules (procedural fluency) and using them with human finesse (interpersonal mastery). This study, using Self-Determination Theory (SDT), perfectly outlines the division of labor.

Here’s my takeaway on the AI vs. human debate: AI's great strength is building competence. The study shows that AI creates a "self-regulated digital learning environment" that reduces a trainee’s "anxiety and fear" - which is huge when practicing something like a first crisis assessment. The chatbot excels at offering "immediate and personalized responses, streamlining the learning process" by identifying technical gaps instantly. For us, this means AI is the optimal tool for trainees to achieve fluency in high-stakes clinical procedures through safe, endless practice.

However, the study highlights why the human supervisor is irreplaceable: they foster relatedness. The researchers observed that students interacting with AI felt like they were in a "vacuum" and "failed to build relationships," even complaining the chatbot "could not assist... like a human teacher." This is crucial: the human supervisor must build a "strong teacher-student relationship" to provide the essential "positive affective condition," helping the trainee process the emotional side of the work and prevent isolation. Furthermore, supervisors are the ethical gatekeepers, reviewing and correcting AI content that may be "inaccurate, inappropriate, or unsatisfactory."

The future of training isn't AI or human; it's AI-enhanced supervision. We use technology for high-volume, safe practice, freeing up mentors to focus entirely on the deep, relational, and ethical work that transforms a competent student into an excellent therapist.
